Having driven past this pub many times, I never knew there was a waterfall on the other side of the road. Today’s walk was a great tonic to go with our gin tasting at Mason’s of Yorkshire, which we can highly recommend.
This route takes you past the waterfall and across fields to Spennithorne, taking in views of Middleham before walking aside the river Ure. After heading up towards Leyburn you are then routed across fields towards Craken House Farm where you can see a statue of Duncan and a very unusual treehouse by the stream as you walk up Mill Lane.
This walk takes you within a stones throw of Wensley, the tiny village which gave it’s name to the dale with a grand entrance to Bolton Hall. My father was the gardener here and we lived on the estate, it’s only in later life you truly appreciate what you had when you were growing up.

This dog friendly ale house is definitely worth experiencing, it was like stepping back in time. The locals sat at the bar and had the same conversation every time another of their group joined them. It was quite amusing to hear the story of the chap who’d recently moved to Redmire.
The landlady was very helpful and told me how the reps from Black Sheep never call in anymore, they are running low on beer mats and other promotional items.
We sat in the window seat and enjoyed the rustic charm of the Pheasant Inn, definitely worth a visit.
