COD & LOBSTER @ STAITHES
One of the quieter parts of the Yorkshire coastline, Staithes to Runswick Bay is a glorious walk taking in two very picturesque fishing villages. A detour down to the Ironstone Mining cove of Port Mulgrave allows you to do a bit of hunting for dinosaur, reptile and ammonite fossils.

We had a forecast for a sunny day on Friday so booked the day off work and we weren’t disappointed, it was glorious.
Parking at the top of Staithes (don’t try driving down there it will end in tears), we made our way down the steep bank to the fishing village of Staithes. We let Roxy have a mad run around the beach before crossing the bridge over Staithes beck to explore the north side cliffs, stuffed with nesting birds and a long harbour quay protecting the bay from the wilds of the north sea.
From Staithes head back up the hill to the cliff tops where you can make your way down to Runswick Bay. We stopped off at Old Nab, a rocky outcrop where you get a great 360 view of two giant coves. By the time we reached Port Mulgrave Roxy was struggling with the heat, we kept her hydrated and she took advantage of whatever shade she could find. The path along the cliff tops is surprisingly awkward with a few stairs to navigate along the way. Port Mulgrave was home to an Ironstone mine and is a great place for fossil hunting. There are quite a few tin sheds and huts once used by miners and fisherman but its a steep climb up and down to the bay so make extra time if you plan to visit.
Runswick Bay is by far the Jewel in the crown of this walk, as you come down the cliffs you will walk through tiny paths between the houses before you reach the sand. If you fancy fish and chips on the beach you will have a long walk to Hinderwell before you descend into the bay. Take some time and enjoy the huge bay, its quite a walk to the far end.
Back up the cliffs from Runswick Bay you will head along a very straight road to Hinderwell, then follow the paths (or road) all the way back to Staithes. Descend back into the village and enjoy a pint at the Cod & Lobster.
The Excelsior Fish and Chip shop at the top of Staithes is definitely worth a visit, we took ours to eat on a lone bench overlooking Port Mulgrove, they were even more delicious sat in the sun with such a stunning view.
This 8 mile walk will take you around 4 hours, or more if you take in some of the detours.
