Kings HEAD @ GUNNERSIDE

Yea, thou I walk through the valley of lead….
There’s a folk song about this walk, “take a walk up the hill along gunnerside Gill”.
How hard can it be walking alongside a river?
We managed to get parked up in the village on platinum jubilee day, put our £1 in the honesty box on the bridge and set off up the hill. So whilst the royals attended their service of thanksgiving at St Paul’s, we were thanking God that there was a pub to return to.
First, a field of Cows, all staring at our dog Roxy. Up, up and more up, till we got on a flat track and could breathe again.
I’ll not bore you with a history lesson, all you need to know is they mined for lead in this valley and they didn’t clear it up when they’d finished, ruins everywhere
Fabulous picnic spot by the river, lots more ups, downs and finally a walk through bluebell woods.
8 miles and 3+ hours later we end up back in Gunnerside at the King’s Head. A roaring fire 🔥 on one of the sunniest afternoons meant we shared a table OUTSIDE with a Spanish couple from Durham.
We had a very refreshing Swaledale blonde from the Yorkshire Dales Brewery. Spot on!!
