Mother Shipton Inn @ Knaresborough
With arguably one of the best surprise views in Yorkshire and a pub with a great landlord where better to take a Sunday stroll.
Sunday 10th September 2023
Today we would have been better listening to the prophecies of Ursula Southeil than looking at BBC weather!!
We parked at Mother Shiptons Inn at 10am, knowing that storms were due at 12.00. Crossed the bridge, along a winding road up to the castle and ‘surprise view’. Not too much of a surprise though as we visited a month ago after my birthday meal. Back down the winding paths to the river and past the World’s End pub (subject of a different pub walk).
Through a car park, past some ruined farm buildings, across the river we then followed the path out of Knaresborough past the allotments (Amazing how much effort people put into 10m2 of land).
Trish was low on blood sugar and devoured a whole bush of blackberries, which seemed to give her strength to stick with my dodgy route and carry on walking. Eventually we came across the golf course with its fair share of “Private”, “Though shall not cross” signs.
A few raindrops reminded us of the impending storms, we decided to cut the walk short and call ahead to book a table. “No room at the Inn” 😕
Ten minutes later after passing a hideaway retreat in the woods we arrived back at Mother Shiptons Inn. We tried asking again for a table, the Landlord was hilarious and accommodating. So Trish enjoyed roast lamb dinner and I had the burger washed down with a pint of Summit from Theakstons.
Then the sun 🌞 came out, no storms for the rest of the afternoon (typical).
1.5 hours, this was a short 4 mile walk with some great views.
