Arden Hall

The Owl @ Hawnby

Wow, wow, wow – descending Murton bank into the village of Hawnby is like entering another world. You’d be forgiven for thinking that you’re the first to discover this paradise land that time forgot. This walk takes pride of place in our hidden gems.

Sunday 12th May 2024

It’s been a while, so we decided to take advantage of a rare moment of sunshine.

One dog walker, a cyclist, a sports car and a couple of farmers on quads. That was pretty much all we saw. Well maybe 1,000+ sheep and a million or so Bluebells.

This quiet valley is amazing, setting off from the idyllic village of Hawnby, we took a look around all saints church, then headed round Coombe Hill to Arden Hall. Who gets to live in such a place?

Up the valley, past some abandoned farm buildings and Hagrid’s hut, these would make excellent holiday cottages. Eventually we crossed the river Rye at Blow Gill; a waterfall underneath the road. Heading up to Moors Gate we passed a flashy sports car before heading back through the fields to Hawnby.

The view from the garden at the Owl is amazing, even better with a pint. Trish had a Guinness for Bob and I had the Theakstons followed by Sunday lunch. The rooms here look amazing so we’ll be coming back to make a weekend of it.

A peaceful 8 mile walk finished off with a beer in the sunshine, this is what Sunday’s were made for

Probably one of the best located boozers we have come across. Nestled in the sleepy village of Hawnby, with a fantastic view down the valley, this location takes some beating. A warm welcome from the barman, hand pulled Theakston’s, Guinness too, a dog friendly bar with an interesting menu and some posh hotel rooms up the stairs to round it off.

Across the road from the pub they have some dog friendly rooms, we’ll be coming back to make a long weekend of this stunning place.
